Italian school
The Institute Marini Gioia is a upper secondary school, placed in Amalfi, one of the most suggestive towns of the Amalfi Coast and one of the first Maritime Republic of Medieval Times that for its historical heritage and peculiarity of its landscapes in 1997, was declared by UNESCO "World Heritage Site". The Amalfi Coast, indeed, is a geographical area of international importance, rich in history, memory, traditions, naturalistic, and architectural treasures, and , at the same time, it is also characterized by the coexistence of single socio-environmental realities peculiar to each municipality of the Amalfi Coast, which mark the didactic and organizational planning. The driving economic activity is tourism, which represents a privileged pole in terms of employment. The agricultural sector is not negligible. Industry is almost entirely missing. The presence of small craft workshops and the tertiary sector is significant. Sensitive is, in some urban areas, the phenomenon of emigration towards cities in Northern Italy or European countries. As results of all these reasons, The High School Marini Gioia has inside a multiple identity: classical, scientific, linguistics, and a touristic-economical soul (It was the first school for tourism in Italy) in which students can approach Tourism and management. The school has about 800 students aged between 14 to 18 years old and a staff of 70 members. The intercultural education is at the very heart of the educational priorities of the school and exchange projects have often been developed in partnership with other upper secondary education institutes in Europe. International Mobility is crucial for enhancing the competitiveness of the schools and for this reason, our students were used to spending part of their second term attending language stages in Spain- England- France, and Germany. The school has significant experience in the following areas:
1. Historical research: we have a Medieval Archive and share projects with Centro Storia e Cultura Amalfitana and Università di Salerno
2. Walking tours for natural heritage promotion and sensibility: we live our land completely; the sensibility of our spaces is increased in the years and so we believe that there is not such a learning experience like walking and checking the country.
3. Marine Environment Conservation: the sea and its tide recall our historical memories and it is still a big resource for our economy but we feel the need to respect it and learn how to preserve this huge heritage. We are going to work for a project concerning this aspect together with Lega Ambiente, Marina Militare e Lega Navale.
